My sister from another mother has died. Professor, mother, traveler, wife, learner, advocate, friend. After Ling Arey Shiao was diagnosed w stomach cancer 8 years ago, she left the professorship she’d worked so hard for and threw herself headlong into the world. Between chemo , radiation and near death emergencies, she traveled and learned. Traveled and learned. She kept getting up. Russia,China, the Middle East, Mexico,Japan India,England and more. Ling never met a stranger - whether riding a camel at the pyramids, hiking the British Isles, witnessing life and death at the Ganges or hopping into a car with Palestinians for dinner. We climbed The Great Wall together. We raised our kids together. We got lost a lot because she was a terrible driver, I have no sense of direction and it’s hard to see the highway sign when you’re laughing. I love Ling and am so grateful our children introduced us. I will miss her forever.
